Ear Candles: Risk of Serious Injuries - FDA Report
Years ago, when I had my yoga center, I use to do ear candling sessions. I probably did over 500 in my practice and rarely did saw an adverse reaction. But yes, they did occur. Not only did I see burns occur in the ear canal but wax dripped down into the ear and occluded the ear drum. I personally experirenced burns in my ear drums after a session in early 2001. My father had died and I had intense grief in my body - and later learned that the inner ear canal has many meridian points connected to the lung meridian. Grief in the lungs in hot energy - and when it met the flame of the candle's fire it burned. The only two clients that I saw that side effect had recently lost someone and were in an acute grieving state. The cones I used were paraffin and linen. They had no herbs or other substances - and they burned nicely. I think that is why I saw so few side effects. Another problem is that people try to cone themselves - or family members with no training. I went through a 2 day certifcation program with a lot of practice and the use of an otoscope throughout the procedure to assure we were cleaning the ears correctly. Below is a report from the FDA warning consulers not to use ear candles. I gave up ear candling years ago as a nurse because I could not find insurance to cover this holistic practice and knew of some of the side effects. I decided not to put myself and my nursing license in a precarious situation due to these rare side effects. What bothers me is that there are day to day serious adverse outcomes from medical devices used in healthcare and rarely does the FDA step in like this and prevent them from being used. But - just thought those of you doing ear candling sessions should be aware of this recent announcement!
Ear Candles: Risk of Serious Injuries
Audience: Consumers, Otolaryngological healthcare professionals
FDA is notifying consumers and healthcare providers of its warning not to use ear candles - a hollow cone about 10 inches long made from a fabric tube soaked in beeswax, paraffin or a mixture of the two - because they can cause serious injuries, even when used according to the manufacturer’s directions. According to advertised claims, a burning ear candle draws ear wax and “impurities” or “toxins” out of the ear canal. Other claims for ear candles include relief from sinus and ear infections, headache and earache, as well as improved hearing, “blood purification,” improvements in brain function, and cure cancer. FDA has found no valid scientific evidence to support the safety or effectiveness of these devices for any medical claims or benefits. FDA has received reports of burns, perforated eardrums and blockage of the ear canal which required outpatient surgery from the use of ear candles.
FDA is especially concerned because some ear candles are being advertised for use in children. Children of any age, including babies, are likely at increased risk for injuries and complications if they are exposed to ear candles. Small children and infants may move during the use of the device, increasing the likelihood of wax burns and ear candle wax plugging up the ear canal. Also, their smaller ear canal size may make children more susceptible than adults to injuries.
Ear candles are sold and promoted in a variety of locations, including health food stores, flea markets, health spas and salons, as well as on commercial web sites.
Consumers and health care professionals are strongly encouraged to report injury related to the use of ear candles to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program:
• Online: www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm
• Phone: 1-800-332-1088
• Mail: return the postage-paid FDA form 3500, which may be downloaded from the MedWatch "Download Forms" page, to address on the pre-addressed form

Prayer increases forgiveness, study shows
Prayer Increases Forgiveness Between Couples (click here)
Here is an interesting study published in the journal of the American Psychological Society - Psychological Science - on the power of simple prayer for one another in a relationship and how it shifts the focus from self to the other person and results in forgiveness. I see this research as a metaphor for why distant Reiki (or other forms of) healing can help others move forward in their lives, get better and heal!

Stress hormone key to alcohol dependence discovered
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/01/100125173452.htm ScienceDaily (2010-01-26) -- Scientists have found that a specific stress hormone, the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), is key to the development and maintenance of alcohol dependence in animal models. Chemically blocking the stress factor also blocked the signs and symptoms of addiction, suggesting a potentially promising area for future drug development.
I saw this research post and thought - why does it always have to be a "drug development" to deal with stress related problems than to recommend yoga, meditation , stress reducing breathing techniques! This is what is so wrong with our society - dependence on drugs - rather than put the time and effort into caring for their body and mind - with something so brilliant as the Science of Yoga!

Yoga Reduces Cytokine Levels Known To Promote Inflammation
Regularly practicing yoga exercises may lower a number of compounds in the blood and reduce the level of inflammation that normally rises because of both normal aging and stress, a new study has shown.
The study, done by Ohio State University researchers and just reported in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, showed that women who routinely practiced yoga had lower amounts of the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) in their blood.
The women also showed smaller increases in IL-6 after stressful experiences than did women who were the same age and weight but who were not yoga practitioners.
IL-6 is an important part of the body's inflammatory response and has been implicated in heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes, arthritis and a host of other age-related debilitating diseases. Reducing inflammation may provide substantial short- and long-term health benefits, the researchers suggest.

Mango effective in preventing, stopping certain colon, breast cancer cells, food scientists find
ScienceDaily (2010-01-12) -- Mango fruit been found to prevent or stop certain colon and breast cancer cells in the lab. That's according to a new study by Texas AgriLife Research food scientists, who examined the five varieties most common in the U.S.: Kent, Francine, Ataulfo, Tommy/Atkins and Haden.
Though the mango is an ancient fruit heavily consumed in many parts of the world, little has been known about its health aspects. The National Mango Board commissioned a variety of studies with several U.S. researchers to help determine its nutritional value.
"If you look at what people currently perceive as a superfood, people think of high antioxidant capacity, and mango is not quite there," said Dr. Susanne Talcott, who with her husband, Dr. Steve Talcott, conducted the study on cancer cells. "In comparison with antioxidants in blueberry, acai and pomegranate, it's not even close."
But the team checked mango against cancer cells anyway, and found it prevented or stopped cancer growth in certain breast and colon cell lines, Susanne Talcott noted.
"It has about four to five times less antioxidant capacity than an average wine grape, and it still holds up fairly well in anticancer activity. If you look at it from the physiological and nutritional standpoint, taking everything together, it would be a high-ranking super food," she said. "It would be good to include mangoes as part of the regular diet."
The Talcotts tested mango polyphenol extracts in vitro on colon, breast, lung, leukemia and prostate cancers. Polyphenols are natural substances in plants and are associated with a variety of compounds known to promote good health. Mango showed some impact on lung, leukemia and prostate cancers but was most effective on the most common breast and colon cancers.
"What we found is that not all cell lines are sensitive to the same extent to an anticancer agent," she said. "But the breast and colon cancer lines underwent apotosis, or programmed cell death. Additionally, we found that when we tested normal colon cells side by side with the colon cancer cells, that the mango polyphenolics did not harm the normal cells."
The duo did further tests on the colon cancer lines because a mango contains both small molecules that are readily absorbed and larger molecules that would not be absorbed and thus remain present in a colon.
"We found the normal cells weren't killed, so mango is not expected to be damaging in the body," she said. "That is a general observation for any natural agent, that they target cancer cells and leave the healthy cells alone, in reasonable concentrations at least."
The Talcotts evaluated polyphenolics, and more specifically gallotannins as being the class of bioactive compounds (responsible for preventing or stopping cancer cells). Tannins are polyphenols that are often bitter or drying and found in such common foods as grape seed, wine and tea.
The study found that the cell cycle, which is the division cells go through, was interrupted. This is crucial information, Suzanne Talcott said, because it indicates a possible mechanism for how the cancer cells are prevented or stopped.
"For cells that may be on the verge of mutating or being damaged, mango polyphenolics prevent this kind of damage," she said. The Talcotts hope to do a small clinical trial with individuals who have increased inflamation in their intestines with a higher risk for cancer. "From there, if there is any proven efficacy, then we would do a larger trial to see if there is any clinical relevance," she said.
According to the National Mango Board, based in Winter Park, Fla., most mangoes consumed in the U.S. are produced in Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Guatemala and Haiti. Mangoes are native to southeast Asia and India and are produced in tropical climates. They were introduced to the U.S. in the late 1800s, and a few commercial acres still exist in California and Florida.

Astrology Vision Board - January 10, 2010
Let’s Ring in 2010 !
Set Our Intentions for the New Year
With an Astrology Vision Board
January 10th, Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00pm
500 Groveland Street, Abington, Ma.
You are invited to the rest of your life! –Take a hand in creating your New Year, 2010 and bring old magazines, a poster board ( color and size of your choosing) and I will provide the journals, scissors, glue and directions. Also bring a good imagination and an open, believing, and willing heart.
There are 12 houses in astrology. You need no prior knowledge of these. We will divide our posters into 12 segments. Each house represents a different aspect of our lives. We will then cut out pictures for each house. Lastly we will create a vision board that we can look at and to for the next 12 months. It is very powerful to take a hand in creating what we want and need in our lives. You will leave with a completed board!
I have been doing this for over 20 years and am still amazed when I look back at my boards at what my intentions have produced. This also makes us really look at what our real desires are, not just our wants. It is a very real tool for creating what we want and need in our lives.
We will have a beginning ritual and an ending ritual to seal our intentions. Anyone that has taken a past workshop with me will get $5.00 off this years Vision Board Workshop.
Cost $40.00

"A brief 1-hour exploration of the the 7 major Chakras (energy centers) of the body - how they effect our yoga practice and every day life experience. Chakra is the sanskrit word meaning wheel or vortex. They are mentioned in the ancient Hindu texts, the Vedas, dating back to 300BC. There are seven major chakras in the body. They run along the spine and correlate with certain body parts, emotions and senses. These centers help regulate our emotional and physical self. Blockages in the Chakras can cause confusion, illness and emotional upset. A Chakra will react by either opening up too wide to get what it needs, thereby filling up and becoming blocked or the Chakra will close down to protect itself and not allow energy in. By learning how our energy centers affect us and how to clear them we can enhance our lives.
After our discussion, we will go through the "5 Tibetans" postures to get our Chakras flowing and end with a juicy 1 hour Yoga Flow class through each Chakra with a 15-minute guided savasana to balance and sooth the soul. Handouts about Chakras & 5 Tibetans to take away. You'll be glowing after this workshop from the inside out!"
